Ian & Claire's Adventure
Day 10
We hired a canoe for the day (pretty cheaply), strapped it to the roof and ten headed to Mom & Dadś grocery store to buy supplies and a cheap fishing rod (no idea how to use it or what tio do if we caught a fish!) and then set off to Swanson River with a very simple map of the Swanson Lakes Canoe Trail. It was miles (past Dolly Varden). We carried the canoe to the first lake, it was pituresque and calm, we had fun paddling around but were pretty unsuccesful at fishing. We saw a bald eagle fly overhead and land in a tree by the lake so we rushed over and tried to find it, scrambled through bushes, just as we nearly given up it flew out, just over our heads.....really great to see close up. Back in the canoe we headed to the next lake, after hours of looking we found the entrance, we think you were supposed to walk with the canoe but we made it through a small stream. Very fiunny, we had to get out and push a couple of times. Once we been round the second lake we decided to head back again as we found the next path but coulnt be bothered to carry the canoe for 1/2 mile (it was heavy!). On the way back we found some huge freshwater clam which we picked out for dinner(Ray Mears would be proud!).
We rushed back along the gravel road, late as usual and dropped off the canoe and headed to Quartz Creek to camp. It was 10:30ish when we got there and had no change to self register Ian went to get some change fromsome fishermen and came back with some donated fresh trout. We decided to give up on the clams as we didnt have time to clean and cook them so we freed them in the lake.
