Helen's Elective
Hi, just trying to catch up and fill you in with everything I have been doing. So please be patient and keep checking over the next few days, I will update you bit by bit.
Tonight I was invited to make like the locals, well the chinese ones at least, and pay a visit to the Cheras night market. The longest night market in KL apparently.
Night markets are very popular amongst the chinese population, there are several doted around the city on various nights of the week, enabling them to shop in the same way we would rely on a supermarket. The main differences are that you can get anything and the food is more exotic and fresher. In a way they are very similar to UK markets, they sell fruit and veg, household equiptment and clothes, but they are held at a time more suited to the community they serve and they are much more of a social event. Families and groups of friends come, buy their goods and have their evening meals at one of the many hawker stalls located around the edge of the market. This principled applied to us.
My outing was obvously a big event to my hosts, the medical students in Amy's flat, who had been planning this for several days. Students in Malaysia don't appear to go out like we do so and they wanted so any outing requires planning, espessialy when they are trying to show two western girls traditional chinese fair.
The market stalls from a hot, bright outline to a tight walkway where people form a steady stream working its way along the neverending line of clothes, food, fruit and CD's. On ariving at the night market you are ussered into this cramped line ocasianally stopping look to at the tacky naffness on offer or sample some of the delecasies on offer, if only I was not a poor student, before working my way down more of the same.
We came away with a mighty seletion chinese and malay treats for tea. Tea soaked egges, nicer than you would think, Nassi Laksar, a sour noodle soup, and Hockein Mee, thick noodles in sauce to name a few. So all in all a good evening.
Sorry I am so behind I am trying to keep up but it seems to take so long to awnser everyones emails.
