Helen's Elective
Hi
Monday again so I thought I would send you all the post weekend lowdown.
Saturday
This saturday I ventured slightly further outside of KL to the Orang Asli museum. The museum is dedicated to the aboriginal population Of Malaysia. The aboriginal population of malaysia are ditributed in small communities throughout peninsular malaysial but their numbers are in decline as a consequence of the country's continual westernisation. The museum aims were to raise awareness and increase external understanding. I found the museum interesting, helpfully written in Malay and English, as the culture belonging to this rural population is in someways primitive and starkly different to the other malaysian communities i have seen so far.
The other good points were the fact entry into the museum was free and that the gift shop contained lots of those sculptures you wish people would't bring you back form their holidays. Don't worry i will not be briniging anything like that back, or you hope i won't.
I reached the museum by bus, which was an inreresting experience. I have not yet mentioned much about transport yet but the whole transport system is a bit mad, or at least the drivers are anyway. I think their moto is each man for themselves as everyone drives as fast as they can, when the traffic isn't stationery, cut each other up and honk their horns loudly. Still it is fun to be passengers and watch every one else driving. They all seem to know what they are doing and i haven't seen an accident yet. My only concern is that cars dont have seat belts and it isn't compulsary to ware one.
In the afternoon Amy got to practice her bartering skills in Chian town when buying a couple of new tops. She managed a saving of 10RM about 1.5 pounds to you guys at home. According to the chinese girls in our flat this wasn't bad but she could have gone lower. I think the key is to be persitant and we are too nice girls. We will have to get Dad to show us how to do it properly, after the Italy experience.
On saturday evening the girls in my flat took me to the night market down the road from our appartment. I have always found makets interesting to look at all the crazy things they have to sell. I tried several of the chinese foods which were on offer, including one which tasted a bit like a yorkshire pudding with jam in it, interesting. The chinese girls also gave me a lesson in chinese pop music. I am not sure i will be converted though.
I will let you all know what I did on Sunday tomorrow, that way you will all have something to read when you are bored at work. See aren't i nice.
