Greg and Kerrie's travels
Sat 21.05.2011 - we left London and rode out to the viilage of Windsor, where the castle is. As Queen Elizabeth had just returned from her visit to Ireland we were hoping she may be at home and invite us in for a cuppa. We thought all was going to plan when we rode up the main street because there were police everywhere so Greg figured she knew he was coming at least!
As it turned out is was just the routine changing of the guard.
Firstly we had a hearty breakfast while waiting for the display and then we wandered up to the gate just outside the castle and watched the new guard march up the street and into the castle to relieve the old guard. The marching music had Greg tapping his toes and swinging his arms and Kerrie and Chris had to hold him back.
We then remounted our bikes and headed for Southampton where Greg's cousin Betty HUGHES lives.
Betty is married to Cyril,
who is known as 'Ciggy' because he used to be a heavy smoker many years ago.
Betty and Ciggy have a unit on the 5th floor of an apartment block overlooking the main channel from The Solent into Southampton which means they get a bird's eye view of every ship coming and going. As Southampton is one of the UK's busiest ports that means they see alot of ships sailing by their window. We enjoyed watching the cruise ships as they reminded us of what it must have been like in the days of the great liners.
After an excellent meal cooked by Ciggy and washed down with a bottle of Moet champagne followed by several bottles of red, we hit the hay.
In the middle of the night Greg got up for a pit stop, with the toilet right near our bedroom. He looked out the kitchen window and saw a liner coming up the channel with all lights blazing. He stood and watched the display for a few minutes before remembering he was standing there in his birthday suit! Luckily he was not sprung.
We packed up next morning and headed towards Devon and Cornwall for the next part of our adventure - the ride to Land's End.
