Last Saturday was the Scavenger Hunt which we have been looking forward to for a long time.Around 12 teams of 2-4 people were given 15 cryptic clues to work out in 5 minutes - the answers all being different establishments in the downtown area.We then had 1 hour to find these places and have our picture taken in front of them. There had been the treat of a storm all day, and it held out until just before the Scavenger Hunt started, then bucketed it down!We did not let this ruin our fun though, but we did get absolutely soaked! After thinking we had done so well, we found that a couple of our answers were incorrect, but we did come 4th.We actually came joint 4th/5th, but had a pint downing contest to choose the place, which Graham won victoriously! So, we got to choose which 'goodie bag' we wanted and we got a great selection of 'pub stuff' including lots of glasses, an ice bucket, and poker set and a CD (see photos).
After the Scavenger Hunt there was an 80's night at Speakeasy, so I had spent the day shopping with my friend for appropriate clothing. We found a surprisingly large amount of stuff to choose from - the Koreans obviously love the 80's fashion. The only problem being that there is no way a westerner is going to fit into any of the skirts and trousers here, but the tops, they tend to wear quite baggy. It does make me wonder where the larger Korean women shop, as they're not all tiny, but all of the clothes look like they're from the kiddies section! So, it was a successful trip, I purchased many bargains including 2 fluorescent tops, a headband and some fluorescent socks. My friend and I then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to back comb our hair and applying blue eye shadow (which of course was all flattened and washed off in the rain!)Meanwhile Graham was at a friendly motorbike shop with another group of our friends, working on a motorbike (more to come on that in later blogs). So, Graham's contribution to the 80's night was a little more rushed - he wore his A Team T.shirt and his 'Rambo' bandana.
Luckily someone had brought along their make-up with them, so I was able to re-apply my eye shadow after the first lot ended up streaked down my face! The night was brilliant, with lots of dancing, including a dancing competition which we both took part in.I won a free shot, and our good friend Shannon took first place with her excellent 80's themed dancing! We also had some fantastic kebabs, as always, from the 'Kebab Scooter' on our way home.
On Sunday afternoon it was time for baseball again.Graham had been earlier in the week to see them get defeated, and unfortunately Sunday was the same. There was a great atmosphere at the game, and we had a good time, but a 7-2 loss was pretty bad.I do however understand the rules a bit better now, so it's all making a bit more sense! There was a group of us there, a mixture of foreigners and Koreans, and one of our Korean friends, Dr Kim, bought us a shrimp burger - that was a first for me, but pretty good. Graham also came home with a stray baseball, which our friend Jonju got as it came into the crowd, and gave it to Graham, as he had been saying he really wanted to catch one.Jonju was having a lucky day as he also won free tickets to a nearby amusement park, again which he gave to us - such a nice guy!We also saw the old lady who had been giving us popcorn at the last game. She had spotted us and came to say hello!
The thing that we found really amazing was the atmosphere at the game, even though we were losing so badly.Yes, many people started to leave before the end of the game to beat the crowds trying to get taxis, but people still seemed in pretty good spirits.Everyone was still singing and cheering; they even got the big inflatable tiger out briefly (see photos). This was really nice to see, as it is so different in England! One of our Korean friends was from Busan (where the opposition was from) and he was wearing the Lotte Giants shirt and scarf in the stand with all of the Kia Tigers supporters and no-one beat him up!We found this amazing.
So, it's back to work, but quite an easy week.Thursday is 'Children's Day' so we all get the day off as it's a public holiday, then on Friday there is a sticker market at my school, so no teaching. The kids can earn stickers in class by doing good work, etc, and then trade them in for goods on this day.Next Tuesday is also a public holiday, so a 4 day week next week too.
