It's been a busy week.On Tuesday my boss took all the foreign teachers (and Graham) out for lunch, as it was one of my co-workers last week at work.He took us to a fantastic buffet, which had lots of western food, so we all pigged out and then spent the afternoon feeling very sleepy at work! Then on Wednesday us foreign teachers went out after work with the Korean teachers, as there were 3 Korean teachers leaving too.We went for Shabu Shabu, but a seafood one this time. Now usually I like seafood, but I'm not so keen on all the squid and particularly the live baby octopus that they added to the bowl of boiling liquid! They then come along with a pair of scissors and cut it up once it's been cooking for a while. It was nice to socialise with the Korean teachers though, and we drank plenty of Soju mixed with strawberry cordial vinaigrette.Sound odd, but the mix really works!
On Thursday I met Graham and some friends' downtown after work for a pub quiz.We did pretty terrible; coming 2nd to last, but it was good fun.So, after all this excitement during the week, we got pizza on Friday night and stayed in.Oh, and Graham got his spousal Visa and alien card, so he can stay!
Saturday was the second home game for Gwangju FC, so we headed to the World Cup Stadium with some friends, full of hope after their last 3-2 victory.I had my picture taken with some of the mascots, and as we entered the stadium the cheerleaders were in full swing. There were not many people at the match, as it was also the start of the baseball season and this is much more popular in Korea. We got sat near another group of westerners, and then a group of OAP's arrived. They brought along flags and drums, and even had a woman singing with a mini microphone. One of the westerners had dressed in a kilt and Gwangju shirt, and had painted his face in the team colours, so they got him to run up and down the stands with the flag and start a Mexican wave! Then at half time they gave out bags with a carton of milk, a red bean paste bun and a thunder stick in.They had some spares, so gave them to us westerners. The football game was terrible, Gwangju lost 1-0, and it should have been more, but we had a great time. There were fireworks again, and every match they do a free prize draw with your ticket numbers, and I won!I got 20,000 Won of vouchers for various food and entertainment places.
On the way home we saw a van selling roast chickens, so we bought a couple and went back to our friends' apartment to have chicken sandwiches. They were fantastic, and it was about 3.40GBP per chicken. After chilling at theirs for a while and playing a music quiz we decided to go to a Nureabang for an hour, before heading to the bar to watch the Bolton/ Birmingham game (our friend is a Bolton fan).We went to the Alien v's Predator Nuraebang (see photo's) which was really cheap and really cheesy, but perfect for an hour of singing in bizarre surroundings! Then it was on to the Speakeasy Bar, where we spent the next 5 hours. It got pretty empty towards the end, so the DJ let us choose some music. We went for lots of 80's music and took over the dance floor. After a fantastic day/ night we had some kebabs from the Scooter Kebab man (kebabs are so much nicer here- I never eat them at home) and then got a taxi home.On the way the taxi driver got out a bag of what we thought were sweets, but we were wrong, he offered us boiled eggs.Only in Korea!
Sunday was our 7 year Wedding Anniversary. Some friends came over to watch the baseball on TV, and brought us some sparkling wine, and then we went out for dinner. We decided to invite a few people along to our favourite Indian restaurant, First Nepal, to help us celebrate. So 11 of us went out for an amazing dinner, then on to Speakeasy again for more drinks and darts.
