Left campsite and weather was a bit better than last night! Stopped at a wee beach for our fruit salad then made our way up further north. We were driving along and this Pukeko was flying in front of us, couldnt do anything about it so hit it and it was stuck on the windscreen for few seconds then rolled off! It was dead. Its a native bird kind of the size of a pheasant. A few spots of blood on the campervan that we will need to clean later! Not too bad for 5 weeks driving and that was the first roadkill! Got to rawene and had to get the ferry over to kohukohu. We could have drove but would have had to go the long way round! The ferry was smaller than the millport one, took 15 mins and only cost about £8. Drove another hour or so up the road and stopped at kaitaia for lunch. Then headed up to doubtless bay. I was pretty good at navigating by now! on the news we had heard about this whale that had been stuck on a beach and they were trying to rescue it, but it died. We thought it would be quite interesting to see (hmm that sounds a bit sad, wanting to see a big dead whale!) so we went to coopers beach. Nothing was there, so we read on iPad and it turned out they moved it yesterday! So we just stayed on the beach for a bit and read our books/had a nap! Then got on the road again. Drove for 10 mins or so then saw a a sign for coopers beach, turned out I had taken graeme to the wrong beach lol! But the whale was definitely gone so just went a wee walk instead! Moved onto huraru falls which is was a massive waterfall, was really pretty! Then went and got a campsite at paihia. Chilled for a bit then went a run round park and Graeme was personal trainer with me doing press ups etc! Went for a shower then treated ourselves to a chippy since we had went a run (i know it kind of defeats the purpose!) the chippys over here aren't the same as back home-it's like chips that u get from chinese if u know what I mean and not chippy chips! Was good all the same! Went back to campervan and was pouring with rain again! The past few days of weather have been so wet! Sounds like it's what back home are getting! The good thing is it's not been cold, the campervan has actually been too warm at times! But hopefully the rain will go away soon! It's spring over here so maybe it's their equivalent of April showers, they have october showers lol!
