We woke up very excited this morning, Graeme in particular as he had been talking in his sleep a few hours earlier saying 'Tafooey' (not quite sure how its spelt but it's the word Graeme's uncle told us to shout to get dolphins to come closer!). We quickly put clothes on and power walked down to the harbour for our dolphin swim.
We arrived at the office and we were given wet suits and masks, and then a briefing on what to expect on the trip. We were told that singing under water through your snorkel attracted the dolphins as they like singing and they'd come over curiously. There was about 12 of us going, 9 swimming. Another couple were there saying it was their third time back as they hadn't swam with the dolphins twice in a row so they were hoping third time lucky. We were also hoping they were third time lucky hehe! We boarded the boat and set sail.
The captain first took us out down the Charlotte Sound which was beautiful in itself and he gave us a bit of info on what we were looking at. He'd had a radio call of where the dolphins had been spotted so we headed their way. We soon came to a large bay and the first dolphins were spotted. We first watched them for a while to see if they were in the mood for us to swim. They seemed quite playful so the tour leader got the swimmers to the back to get in the water. We dropped ourselves in… brrr it was soooo cold, so cold that I couldn't even breathe through the snorkel. We looked around for a bit but the water was a bit murky. Graeme saw a couple of dolphins swim under us. Quickly after the whistle was blown telling us to get back on the boat. We followed instructions and got back on both a bit disappointed. I'd seen nothing (plus I'd gained a big gash on my foot when I jumped in) and Graeme had only seen a few dolphins but it wasn't 'amazing' like they promised.
The driver then said he was going to take the boat out to a clearer area, and we soon came across the rest of the pod of dolphins. The pod followed the boat which was amazing as they must've had an idea what we were doing and they were interested. We lured them to a calmer area of water and then got back in the water. This time we were a lot more used to the temperature so found it easier. We started singing or 'brrr' singing through our snorkels. Before we knew it we were surrounded by dolphins swimming around and under us. It was incredible. They actually liked our singing. Me and Graeme started saying 'tafooey' under the water to and it kept bringing them back again (thankyou Tony) they were so curious and kept swimming around us. If your ears were under water you could here them speaking back making a dolphin noise. It was fantastic. Totally worth the money (and the bash on the foot hehe).
After 20 minutes the whistle blew and we were back on the boat. The tour guy said that was one of the best swims he'd seen this year. We were so chuffed and so were the couple there for the third time! The boat then journeyed back to the harbour and we finally had a group photo which would go on their facebook page.
We had a bit of a wander then around the harbour and booked our ferry ride for the next day (1.15pm yey I get a lie in hehe!). We headed back to the campsite early for a sort out and a relax. Then had our dinner before heading to bed. Lets hope Graeme doesn't sleep talk again hehe.
