Left Europa campsites day earlier than I meant to- I forgot which day it was.
Sacha had her final swim in Lake Garda.
I was going to some thermal pools but then I thought it would be too crowded on a Sunday so decided to head straight off to Verona. The route took me by many stone quarries selling marble etc.
The campsite is called Castel San Pietro and is on a hill near a castle which is being renovated and there are amazing views over Verona.
The campsite was not ready for checking in but the nice young man at reception said that if I left my passport he would keep a place for me.
Then I drove down and found a shady spot to park. It is free on a Sunday until Monday morning and really I could have stayed there overnight.
Walked across the bridge over the fast flowing river Adige and found Juliet's balcony. All very strange. One wall was covered in chewing gum which people had written love messages on. Another had a load of padlocks pinned to it. I noticed walking back that there were some padlocks over wires that went across the river. Where did this padlock craze start?
Then there was the bronze statue of Juliet which is said that if you rub the right breast you will find a new lover.
Then of course was the balcony.
I then walked down a smart shopping street to the arena where they have some famous operas. Tonight was Aida which would have been good but is on for 4 hours and doesn't start until 9.15 pm. If only I had camped in the parking place it would have been easier but I still think I would have been too tired. Maybe next time!
I bought an ice cream cone. (Hot tip-don't by 2 scoops in very hot weather)
I gave some to Sacha and 5 minutes later she was sick in the entrance to Palazzo degli Scaligeri the former residence of the Della Scala family. They built many palaces and bridges and were patrons to such as Giotto and Dante. They were deposed in 1389.
The heat was probably too much and we walked back and took the van up to the campsite. People friendly and although no electric hook up there is a kitchen that can be used. I bought a can of beer just to try and it went down very well in the heat.
Evening walk up to the view point and chatting to some dishy photographers.
