We arrived in Mumbai at 9.00am after an overnight train. The journey was ok but neither of us got that much sleep. Our intention was to sleep for a couple of hours and then to have a look around. This quickly changed once we saw the room we were staying in. It was the worst so far, with no window and it being so small it was like a sweat box. It had a shower, but it was a shared squat toilet that wasn't pleasant at all and it was the most we have paid for a room! We didn't really have enough time in Mumbai to look around for another room so we settled for it but avoided the room for as long as possible.
We had a quick shower and change and then went to see some of Mumbai. It wasn't as bad as Delhi but it was close. Lots of beggars and people harassing you for money all the time, we were glad we were only here for one night. We wondered down to the gate way of India and got on a boat to Elephant Island to have a look at some temples. We thought this would be a good way to spend the day with not much hassle, and we were right. We enjoyed the temples, had a walk around the island, but then had to look for shade as the weather was getting so much hotter the further south we were travelling.
We promised ourselves before arriving in Mumbai that we would go and see a Bollywood film. We went to the Regal cinema in Colaba and booked to 2 tickets knowing nothing other than there would be some singing and dancing in it at some stage. So we had an early tea at Churchills resturant (named after our very own). The prices were a little more expensive than usual however Gemma's prawn pasta was very tasty. We thought the cinema would be busy bearing in mind this is the most heavily populated city in India with 6 million people and 50% of these in poverty. It was'nt the case and we had an entire row of seats for ourselves and we must of stuck out like sore thumbs as all the Indians were on the back row seats and we were slap bang in middle on our own. The cinema was like an old style play house and with stalls and balcony seating very Regal like it's name.
We thought it was quite amusing that everyone stood up to the Indian national anthem before the film, obviousley when in Rome we stood too. I believe this was something the brits used to do until our film industry was taken over be the Yanks. We realised as soon as the film start why the Indians had opted for back row seats, the sound was nearly deafeningly loud, I don't think they know what dolby is yet. Anyway the film was mainly in Hindi with splattering of english has one of the characters lived in america. Even though it was hard not understanding the language we were able to follow the scenes and if we were not sure we made our own story up to fill in the gaps. Typically this was not a film that Matthew would of watched in England, to much crying even from the male characters. Gemma loved it though and as she had'nt had a Sunday morning film fix for a while it was just the job.
So we went back to the sweat box for the night safe in the knowledge the beach was calling us the next day, yippppeeee Goa for Christmas!
