The journey from Udaipur to Mount Abu was a nightmare from the start. It was an early start and i wasn't feeling too well anyway. We had to wait about 3 hours for our bus to turn up and they told us it was because the bus had a problem with its breaks....that gave us confidence(NOT).
When the bus finally arrived i thought we could just get on and i could fall asleep for the whole journey that was supposed to be 4 hours. Well i didn't get any sleep, the roads were so bumpy is was as though we were on a rally track. As we were sat at the back of the bus, any bumps we did go over ( and is was at full speed) Matthew hit is head on the roof of the bus we bounced so high. The bus driver also decided to stop twice for about an hour each time...i wasn't happy as the places they stop never have toilets and neither do the buses. I think it was the worst i have felt since we have been here and the journey definatley didn't help any. By the time we arrived in Mount Abu, neither of us were very happy!
We did however get a really cheap room fairly close to the bus station so i didn't have to walk very far before i could lay down. I proceeded to be poorly for the next 2 days and the room we were in wasn't great. It was bucket showers for us and a toilet that didn't really flush, with the worst smell so far in any of the bathrooms, sometimes the smell made me feel physically sick! So our stay in Mount Abu wasn't as productive as we had planned as Matthew wanted to go trekking...that never happened.
Due to 2 days being wasted we only had 1 day left so see all the sights. We would not have been able to do this on our own so we booked a 1 day tour through the local bus station that cost us 1 pound each, and it was worth it even though the entire tour was explained in Hindi we still had a good time.
Mount Abu is where most Indians go on their honeymoon, and the bus tour was full of honeymooners and us. As we couldn't understand what the guide was saying we spent most of the day match making and deciding whether the honeymooners made good matches as most of them had had arranged marriages. Some made good matches (so we thought), but the best looking guy on the bus definately pulled the short straw, he could have done so much better. Well we thought so anyway!
The tour took in all the major sights with the jain temples being the best we have seen. The intricacy in the sculpturing of the marble was mind blowing. We spent ages just mezmorised by how good these were. Unfortunately no cameras allowed. Sorry. The one strange thing about this temple is that it didn't allow menstruating women in, although how they would find out we had no idea!
After the tour we went for something to eat, and Matthew wanted to try a local dish. The waiter recommended a Masala Dosa, when it came out it just looked like a drain pipe. It was nice, but he couldn't eat it all.
The morning we were leaving we went down to the lake and hired a pedalo for an hour to realx on. This was really romantic and we could see why all the Indians come here on their honeymoon. It was so picturesque you could forget you were in India.
This is our last stop in Rajasthan, a short stop in Mumbai and then onto Goa.
