OH MY WORD! We have never ever done anything so hard as climbing Mount Kinabalu. Apparently (according to the leaflet) anyone with average fitness can climb this mountain, well every single single person we spoke to said this was WRONG! Including a guy who had been to Everest Base Camp (who we beat to the summit I might add!). It was a 6km up to our guesthouse in the mountain. It started off finem with a rest stop every kilometre but then it started to rain. Hard. It was so depressing we were soaked & had to climb and climb over slippery rocks & steps & stones that were kind of waterfalls by now. I was close to tears but we eventually made it to the top after about 4 hours. Everything we had was soaked, including the change of clothes we had in our bags. We were in a dorm room with two other people who had their stuff hangin everywhere to dry. We found out tho they they had tumbl dryers in the guesthouse so we paid near on ten pounds to have everything dryed out for us, which was the best feeling in the world, we probably would have paid 50! We had a meal & tried to sleep from 7pm to 2am when we had to wake upt to climb to the summit. It was almost vertical & you had to pull yourself up by a rope. It was very tough but as it was dark you kept on going thinking that you were nearly there as it always looked like the top was only a few hundred metres away (but it wasn't!). We made it up there in 3 and a half hours to watch the sunrise. It was freezing up there but thankfully there was a small break in the clouds so we did get to see a pretty sunrise. Then it was a hellish hike downwards to the guesthouse. We heard it was going to rain & the thought of getting soaked again drove us to only having a half hour break before setting off the 6kms to the bottom of the mountain. It took us as long to get down as it did to come up as our legs were like jelly & we had no control over them whatsoever. Our guide was 2 centimetres behind us trying to hurry us along but it was no good, we could hardly move & literally walking like old men, plus it did start to rain when we were 3kms from the bottom so we did the rest with no stops & it was awful. I thought we'd completely ruined our legs & we would be in wheelchairs for years! But we made it in the end & got certificates for it. We are very proud of ourselves but don't think we'll be doing it again in a hurry!
