On the boat trip down to the camp we saw some Probiscus Monkeys hanging out in the trees. They are the ones with the massive noses, apparently the locals call them the "Dutch Man" as they think all Europeans have big noses! We also saw some small black monkeys & lots of birds. As we got off the boat the other boat of guest said they saw Orangutans, which would have been excellent to see. They release them here after the rehabilitation centre but unfortunately we never saw any during our stay at Uncle Tans. We were only staying one night but most people were doing a two night stay & after our induction talk we were kind of glad that we only signed up for one night as the second day you do two jungle treks. The first one would have been bad enough as it was so muddy & rainy but the second one was a night trek where they pull out tarantulas from holes & the water spills over your wellies & fills up your boots & there are spiders that walk on the water & it just sounded awful!! We just did two boat safaris. The night one was cool as we saw a few different owls but they were awake so we could get too close but some other birds, like the kingfisher, were fast asleep & you could go right up to them in the boat & get some great photos. The second boat trip was at 6am the next morning. We saw loads of hornbills, including a rare species & a rare snake bird, some more probiscus & black monkeys and lots of herons. We were hoping to see elephants, snakes & crocodiles but we were unlucky & seeing them is very very rare as the noise of the boats scare them away. After leaving Uncle Tans we took the bus down to Semporna.
