We entered Peru on Monday and survived the complicated system at customs that saw us joining about 6 different queues and filling in loads of bits of paper. We made for the nearest town called Tacna, parked and went in search of somewhere to stay. Sadly Peter and Jackie had their truck broken into and they lost all their electrical stuff including their laptop and their cameras. It was a horrible experience and a very unwelcome way to start our visit to Peru. We will not be able to leave the trucks unattended in the future unless they are in a secure compound. We are driving along the pan American highway which goes along the coast and through some amazing scenery, with desert and bare mountains on one side and the Pacific on the other side. There is very little access to the bays as the cliffs are so high and it is impossible to get to them.
We have booked into a hotel tonight as we really needed a wash! we are having to buy all our water at the moment as we daren't put other water in the tank as it would be contaminated. Even with the filter it is too much of a risk. This means that we are washing up with bottled water too!
We are about 600 km from Lima now and we will drive on for the next couple of days, stopping in Nazca to see the Nazca lines.
