In order to get to Mumbai we first had to endure the mammoth 28 hour train journey. This we really had not been looking forward to. It was not quite as bad as we had expected. It was pretty crowded in our compartment at times but we were happy enough reading our books and listening to music. Unfortunately some of our fellow passengers decided to go to bed pretty early, about 7pm! which meant folding down the beds, meaning we had nowhere else to go but bed. Once again it was not the best nights sleep and even once we got up the next morning we knew we had pretty much all day still to spend on the train. We did get to meet an indian actress from Mumbai. She acts in soaps so shall need to look out for her on the telly. I also managed to get quite a chunk of The Da Vinci Code read. By the time we eventually arrived in Mumbai we just wanted off that train.
After showering and freshening up at our hotel we were ready to go out and see what Mumbai had to offer. Immediately we noticed the change in temperature. It is much more humid in Mumbai and even at night it doesn't get very cold. It also appeared to be more westernised than the other parts of India we had visited. We decided to visit the trendy area of Colaba first. Here we saw the Gateway to India and took a walk along the harbour. We had some dinner then took a look at the bazaar.
The next day we got up early to take a ferry over to Elephanta Island. Elephanta Island is a pretty small island with temples up on the top of a mountain. In order to get there we had to go up what felt like a million steps! We were both pretty sweaty by the time we got up there. Funny how it doesn't mention that in the guide book! Anyway once we got to the top the temples were really quite disapointing. They were all pretty much eroded away and there was not much else to see. There was not very much information on them either. In addition to this, a monkey stole Lauren's Mountain Dew! Yes a monkey. It even had the cheek to open it and drink it in front of her!
The previous day we were pretty excited to spot a Subway. Having not had one since we left Scotland and with it being a whole month away from home we decided we deserved one. It was so good. The best tuna mayonnaise subway ever! mmmm. After stuffing our faces we took a walk to the bazaar and bought ourselves some DVDs of our favourite Bollywood films and the music to go with them. All we need now is something to play them on. With a few hours to go before taking our overnight train to Goa we had enough time to see yet another Bollywood film. Luckily a new one had been released that day so we went to see it. It was good but not quite as good as the others. We have since heard it has caused some sort of outrage in India, something to with a controversial song.
Thought I better mention while in Mumbai me and Lauren were asked to be in a Bollywood film. While walking along the bazaar we were approached and asked to come to filming the next day. They were to be filming a London restaurant scene and needed white people to be in the background! Unfortunately we were to be on the train to Goa at the time of filming.... so for now stardom will just have to wait!
