World - Bring it on!
I cant believe how quickly the second half of India has flown by. To think that is the full 6 weeks done. Looking back however I feel lucky that in that 6 weeks we have been able to see and do so much.
Our final stop in India is Chennai. We arrived early yesterday morning. Chennai is the 4th biggest city in India and I was actually quite excited about coming back to a big city where there is always lots guaranteed to be happening. After a quick power nap and breakfast in the hotel we were out into Chennai to see some sights. Now there is one thing I shall not miss bout India - arguing! I have never had to argue with people so much in my whole life. Except on this particular occasion it nearly turned into a whole big fight in the middle of the street. We had made a deal with a tuc tuc man that for R400 for 4 hours one of his men would drive us around taking us to all the sights we wanted to see. Now in our experience this was slightly overpriced but not too bad a deal. The man sure enough drove us first to a temple, a church, the marina ( a big long beach which was hit by the Tsunami killing 200 people) and through Georgetown. He then suddenly announced after an hour and a half that we had one attraction left to visit before taking us back to our hotel. This was not the deal! He suddenly decided it was R100 per attraction then a big price for every extra one. NO! We were not taking it. Why does everyone try and rip us off?? They expect because we're 2 young girls we are going to accept it. Not us! The whole way back to the hotel I agued our case. He knew he was riping us off. He had the whole fuel argument thing going on blah blah blah but we know exactly how much fuel costs here. We have been in enough tuc tucs to know! Anyway I told him if he could change the agreement so could we and I would only pay him R200. He was not happy. He took us back to the hotel and we continued to argue. I asked to speak to his manager he wouldn't get him. I tried to give him R200 but he wouldn't take it. If we had more guts we would have walked away giving him nothing. Should have. Anyway voices started getting raised, fingers pointing and he got pretty aggressive and threatening so we threw the R400s at him. Hope it makes him happy. We were pretty angry about it but hopefully its taught him to think twice before trying to rip people off.
Anyway not long after we found a huge shopping centre. Seriously we have never been so excited. Its amazing how quickly you can go from hating a country to absolutely loving it again. There were loads of shops, food outlets and best of all - loads of Christmas decorations and a Santa! It was the first time this year I have felt Christmassy. It was so good. We had a subway, then looked round every single shop in the centre. Later we watched a film, which made me cry when the dog died (talk about an emotional day) then had our last proper dinner in India. We had a buffet in our hotel. As Lauren says it was a fitting last meal, they served both my favourite Indian meal, Paneer Butter Masalam and hers, Dal Fry.
That brings me up to right now. I am sitting in the Internet booth. Writing this for the second time as my computer crashed and wiped everything. That is something I shall not miss, dodgy computers. We are to fly to Singapore at 11.30 this evening. Feeling sad to be leaving India. It has been incredible. As you will have read at times it has been so frustrating we have been close to tears but on the whole it has all been worth it. We have managed to see so many different places, and learnt so much about Indian people, their lives, cultures and religions. Travelling India has been like like visiting several different countries. It has all been so different. If you asked me what my favourite part was I couldn't possibly tell you. Every bit has been amazing.
So there we go 6 weeks in India and we have survived. No serious illnesses apart from a 24 hour case of Delhi Belly. No serious accident apart from a cycle rickshaw accident and cow attack!
Onwards and upwards to Singapore!
