After spending a day and night in Delhi, where we caught up with some fellow travellers, had a cocktail in QBar and spent a rather long time waiting on Ali to organise our tickets and vouchers for the rest of the trip, we were on a 6am train to Jhansi. This came after the news the night before showing scenes from the Mumbai train incident which went on fire. Needless to say we were pretty nervous about the journey. However, everything went smoothly. The train station was chaotic to say the least but we managed to find our train and seats and most importantly we got off at the right stop. The train journey itself was fine. We were in an air conditioned carriage, were brought breakfast and had plenty foot space. My only complaints are the toilets. A squatty tiolet consisting of a hole leading down to track surrounded by pee. A squaty toilet is difficult at the best of times but when on a shaky train hovering above the tracks...well...it wasn't easy.
We arrived in a place called Jhansi where we were to get our bus to Khajuraho. Now this is an experience I will never forget. Not for good reasons. It was a very long, smelly, crushed 6 hours! Our bus turned out to be a regular bog standard bus the locals used. We paid for our seat, which was tiny! Then had to wait until the bus was full before it would leave. This was about another hour and a half later. India time is the most frustrating thing ever. Now when I say full, I mean full no room left anywhere. There were people all up the isle, hanging of the sides of the bus and sitting on the roof. Poor Lauren who had the isle seat had people's elbows and knees amongst other body parts jamming into her. We both have bruises from being so crushed. At one point someone was leaning on Lauren's head!
The bus was moving so slowly and stopped everywhere. I seriously didn't think we would ever make it to Khajuraho. Later in the journey I realised one of the girls behind me was throwing up outside the window. As long as it wasn't over me it was fine. Three fights broke out on the bus during the 6 hours! I think mostly over fighting for seats but it was pretty scary. Then...after one stop I noticed a man with chains round his wrist standing on the isle. I then realised he was chained to another man behind him. He was then handcuffed to another man carrying a big gun. We were on a bus with criminals!! What? Nothing was going to surprise me anymore.
I have never been so relieved to get off a bus! Luckily our hotel was close by and really nice.
The next day, today in fact, we did a tour of the love temples. Now we decided we had travelled by car, train, metro, plane, boat, rickshaw, camel, elephant, and foot. What was left, motorbike! So we hired a couple of motorbikes (and drivers) for the day! It was definitely the best way to do it, so much fun. The only injury I received was from where my nail dug into my finger because I was holding on so tight.
The temples, which are all to do with the Kama Sutra, were really interesting...and well detailed. The carving was pretty inpressive. We also got taken to a big canion in part of a national park. Saw some monkeys and wildlife which was nice.
I really like Khajuraho. It is really quiet and lots of nice natural sites. It meant us going round by motor bike was possible and definitely one of the most thrilling days yet.
