Happy to arrive back in the heat of Delhi we were not to be staying long. We had arranged to drive to Agra the following morning. However, the day we arrived back happened to be Diwali. This is also known as the festival of light. Celebrations were taking place that night and I have never witnessed anything like it. Put it this way, it was a fireman's worst nightmare! Fireworks were going of everywhere! Left, right and centre. Everywhere I looked were fireworks and firecrackers. Children were setting of fireworks, running around them, standing right next to them, people were setting them off under electric cables and everything. I have never been so terrified. My short journey to the tourism office felt like I was running through a war zone. Dodging them was impossible as every corner turned another one would go off right in front of my face. I have never been so relieved to indoors. In saying that it was aspectacular site, especially from our balcony and rooftop terrace. All the family homes were lit up too and everyone was in good spirits.
The next day we left for Agra. THe following morning we were up early once again to see the sun rise over the Taj Mahal. It was definitely worth the early rise. It didn't seem quite real seeing it in real life. It was kinda like it was a big cardboard cutout...until we got inside. It was spectacular. I can definitely see why tourists come from all over the world to see it.
