USA Travels
Have sent this again as wifi was rubbish this morning. Having trogged around many temples and stupa (I'm stupafied!) during the day, the magic moments often occur in the evenings when we seem to congregate together and swap stories of previous adventures and amusing moments. There is rarely a moment of silence before someone chips in with a new dimension, joke or anecdote which has us all in stitches. We leave each other to attend to sore feet, bites and aches and pains after the rigour of the day knowing someone will make a crack at breakfast which will spark off a conversation that will give us the energy to see another bloody temple. This trip is graded as comfort level. A higher grade than last years Indochina trip. Yes, the Hotels are a bit better, but the schedule so far has been challenging. Hundreds, even thousand step climbs two or three times a day leave their toll of swollen ankles and tales of out of body experiences as we near the summit and see another bloody stupa. This, as you can see from the pictures is a conical pile of bricks, sometimes plastered, which has no entrance, contains b***** all and is always at the top of a mountain. Our guide delights in telling us to take our shoes and hats off as an act of respect as we hop about wondering what will get us first, sunstroke or that sharp bit of grit trapped between granite and flesh. We all agree that a bit of shopping and rest by the pool would be great but understand that two more temples are on the agenda tomorrow. Ah, the Treasures of SriLanka! SR. Does not get rave reviews for its food but I can only think that reviewers only sample Hotel Buffets. These are good enough if no way exceptional. Go to the local restaurants and it seems to be a different picture. Spicy but not too hot. Tasty and filling with delights such as wing bean curry, banana flower curry together with loads of other things you would not think would taste scrummy. So far no reports of tummy problems among the group although I did spark a debate about what to call the debilitating condition - Dheli Belly, Bangkok boogies, at which point Ruth piped up, 'SriLankan Sh*ts'. I know just how to feed the lines to her! You can't take her anywhere! Take care R & D Saturday We are in Kandy and have visited another two Temples. The first the Temple of the sacred tooth. (Buddha's) was a hard slog over cobbles and stone steps culminating in quite a frightening crush amongst the crowd caught up in a religious fervour. We witnessed some sort of ceremony and got pushed from pillar to post. Bare feet bruised and battered we retrieved our shoes and moved on through the town to a colourful Hindu Temple. We recon our guide has read all of the guidebooks and decided to ignore them. The Botanical Gardens came next. Best seen early morning or late afternoon. Needless to say we arrived at midday for a two hour stay. We really must learn about the food ordering. Having ordered a vegetable curry and rice I was presented with six bowls of vegetables and enough rice to feed a family of four. Cost about £4. We will not be eating this evening! Jeanette's ankle is now fully walkable. She let slip that she had left three pairs of knickers out to dry the other evening and the monkeys pinched them. We are sure we saw them on the musicians heads in the temple! An evening of culture was promised in the Red Cross Hall. This was provided by dancers and musicians from a local village. ****, they must be long dark nights in the jungle! More heavy work in the bar to come as I post this to you. Take care R&D Guess what, the bloody dancers have followed us up to the Hotel!
