Hi again. It was with regret that we packed up after 4 wonderful days in the fantastic place of Coral Bay as 4 days was all we could get in this popular motor camp. Before we headed south we drove out to the marina where you can walk out to the end and see lots of fish of all types and colours some quite big in the crystal clear water, a bit like looking into a aquarium, fantastic. Hitting the road again felt good, cruising down those long straight roads that disappear into the distance over fairly flat and open dry country. The road trains seem to have now disappeared with only the very occasional one heading towards you. In the past some would not pull over much and sit right on the white line and if I did not move over much also the van swayed around a lot. As I drive with the window down the noise was quite deafening which scared Steph but I found it slightly entertaining. You really have to hold on to the steering wheel as the draft just about sucks the wax out of your ears!
Next port of call was Quobba 50 km off the main Highway by the sea where we planned to camp at a rather primitive looking motor camp. When we arrived you could see a very large water spout from the famous blowhole where you can get very close to it. We were also able to see lots of whales splashing about quite close to the cliffs and a pod of dolphins. We watched with many other visitors in awe at these amazing sights. There was a big sign saying warning King waves can kill and later on we discovered on a blog site that some tourists watched in horror as a very large wave appeared out of nowhere and came over the cliff top and continued some 50 metres into the car park turning one over one car and left people running for their lives. Three people have been killed in the area in the past by these freak waves which wash over the same cliff that we were standing on!
After driving through the so called make shift motor camp which was $11 each with virtually no facilities the decision was made to travel on to Carnarvon where the 2 top rated camps were full so we found a lower rated camp where we booked in for two nights. Carnarvon is a nice town which is not large but quite modern with a lot of new houses and a great water front which is being renovated and you can still see some damage from the last cyclone earlier this year. The plantations in the area supply about 70% of Perth's winter veges etc. They have a great space museum as part of their space observation centre which helps NASA with information etc. Steph and I climbed into a life size Allolo 11 space capsule simulator where you are lying down with knees bent and a screen above you showing original footage from NASA on the count down and lift off and views of the earth from space. The capsule is shut and the noise is very loud and it vibrates which makes it very life like and the whole fantastic experience lasts 7 minutes.
Had a go at fishing today for a few hours from a pier but no luck but we have still had a nice lazy day after a long enjoyable walk around the water front yesterday.
Spending tonight in a better camp tonight which is a lot closer to town where we plan to walk into and treat ourselves to a place who serve the best fish and chips in town. Shark Bay is to be our next exciting destination so will talk from there. Cheers.
