For the New Year celebrations, Juan had arranged for everyone to go camping in Bryon Bay. At first we were a bit dubious but after Fraser Island we thought this would be easy, plus were on a powered site =) We were booked in for 3 nights but due to work etc most people only stayed for New Years Eve, so the first night was a girly one! We had pre-booked but the campsite was packed, so we had to drive around for a while through the 10+ fields before we eventually found a spot.
When we arrived we began to set up camp. We had 2 tents, one to sleep in and one to put all our food and drinks in. After a lot of effort, we managed to set up the 6 man tent then stood back to admire our work. This was until someone called over that we had put it up wrong! A guy called Michael from the paddling pool next door told us what we had done wrong then generously offered to help (we loved him for this). Once the tents were up we set up the rest of our camp, a table with chairs around, a light, music etc.
The first night we ordered pizza and sat with drinks having a girlie night until two crazy guys called Ben and Vidler called in for drinks. They were making their way around the camp with a small cool bag full of beer, and decided we'd be the lucky ladies to enjoy their company. After talking for a while we decided to play a trick on our neighbours, Ben emptied a wheelie bin and hid inside while Vidler pushed him over to the next camp. He told people we worked for the campsite and if they had any rubbish they could put it in this bin. As they did, Ben jumped out and scared the crap out of people, it was hilarious!! The campsite is the biggest in Byron so when we went for a wonder we met a lot of random people!
After a late drunken night, we woke up early in the morning in a really, really hot tent, not good for a hangover! We went into Byron for lunch, had a look around and then stocked up on more alcohol for New Years Eve =)
Back at the campsite the boys arrived and set up their tent, then the carnage began! Obviously, there was a lot of drinking and we got to know the boys who we hadn't met before. When it came to 12 o'clock, we all began the count down then insisted everyone sing Old Lang Syne. Now, we thought it was a NYE tradition but apparently not! Despite no one knowing what they were doing, we had everyone doing the arm shaking while we sang the only bit we knew then hummed the rest, was brilliant! As soon as we had finished our countdown we heard another 5,4,3,2,1 so we joined in and had another, then another, then another! After about our 5th one we heard a giant countdown coming from the stage in the centre of the campsite, so we all ran as fast as we could, jumping over and around tent ropes en route. God knows how we didn't fall over! Once there we were all bopping around doing another 5+ countdowns then the 'ozzy ozzy ozzy' song, it was awesome!
There was supposed to be a field party but after searching for it and finding out that this year it wasn't on (typical), we all headed back to our camp for our own little party! At silly o'clock, Sam and Nathan got a bit bored so went for a walk and played 'who can steel the best thing' game, which is pretty self explanatory. Nathan was shocking and lost, Sam on the other hand came back with a cowboy hat, beach ball and coco pops =) These coco pops are responsible for Dani having her new nickname of Munchkin. The reason, well… As it was becoming daylight she decided she was hungry and began eating the best steel of the day. But instead of eating them like a normal person, she started rummaging inside, holding her hand up and dropping them into her mouth. Harley who hadn't spoke much for a long time (due to his messy state), suddenly chirped up saying she was being a munchkin.. Random but very true!
After spending the morning chilling out and trying to stay cool, it was decided we would all head up the coast to Coolangatta for a New Year swim and the obvious.. drinks =)
