Mission Beach.. all there is to say about this really is the SKY DIVE!!
We booked it with a guy called Thomas in Cairns and he told us that it is the most amazing feeling in the world, and he wasn't wrong.
From the moment we booked it Sam began panicking, mainly due to the fact that she's scared of heights, but it was something that she really wanted to do. The few days leading up to it she was having dreams about it and freaking out a little every time the subject was brought up. Dani on the other hand was calm and really excited about doing it.
When Thomas showed us the video he got from his sky dive, this didn't help matters. Sam instantly thought she would back out, despite really wanting to do it. The night before they had a quiet night in preparation and Dani tried hard to keep Sam distracted.
When it came to the day of the sky dive, we were picked up from our hostel in Cairns and transported down to Mission Beach. Because we had booked to stay down that night the lady who was allocating times put us on on the later jump as we were not going back to Cairns, so although we arrived at 10.30am we weren't jumping until 3pm.
We thought this would be abit of a nightmare as Sam would freak out abit and Dani really wanted to do it but it ended up being a good plan. We were taken to Scottys Beach House where we were staying and whilst waiting to be picked up, sat and watched tv. This distracted us from the fact we were going to be jumping out a of a plane in a few hours.
When we were picked up and taken to the jump centre, Sam was surprisingly calm. We were given instructions of how to sit when exiting the plane etc and then were shuffled into the plane, all very fast. We both paid for a solo DVD, so instead of our tandem master having a recorder on his hand, we had a separate camera guy jump with us, so before we went of the plane he interviewed us. As you can see from the DVD's, this was one of the scariest bits, let alone the plane!
Once the plane leaves the base it takes about 20 minutes to reach the altitude needed to jump out. The guys who were our 'tandem masters' were really nice, joking around with us which helped keep us distracted. The views were amazing and got more impressive the higher we went. As we were flying up the guys would show us there watch that showed the altitude we were at, every time we thought we were nearly there, we weren't even close.
We were all relaxed, then the doors open! The noise from the wind is unbelievable and it was really cold. One of the girls in our group went first followed by Sam then Dani. The best way to explain it is that the first few seconds of falling out of the plane are terrifying because you are upside down and all disorientated as you plummet to the earth. Once you stabalise the 60 second free fall is amazing! The speed you drop is unbelievable and you cant control your body (which you'll be able to see from the pictures). Once the parachute opens, you get pulled upwards before gliding down to the beach admiring the gorgeous view of the East Coast and the Barrier reef. Both our tandem masters gave us the parachute to control so we glided ourselves down part of the way. Back on the beach we were so happy and proud of ourselves as you will be able to tell from the DVD =)
That night we were buzzing and couldn't sleep due to still being excited. We got up the next morning and headed to Townsville
