Day 1 started with us loading our jeep up with all the camping equipment and shopping needed for our trip, then driving to the garage for everything to be checked and another safety talk. When we got there we were asked if we had any alcohol as we were advised not to take any due to weight restrictions. The girls hadnt brought any and were going to do what was suggested by staff and buy it on the island, the boys however had brought 6 boxes of goon, yes thats 24 litres! After a discussion with the garage man they decided they would leave 4 and just take 2 as that shouldnt effect the weight too much. We were told where we were allowed to drive and Sam, Marco and Gregory were given instructions on how to use the 4WD as they were the drivers. We were told what to do if we got stuck as we would be driving off road on dirt and sand tracks, and given other advice on what to do on our trip. Then, the group of 10 people who had known each other for less than 24 hours, were sent off in a 4WD to explore Fraser Island for 3 days without knowing whether they could actually drive this massive vehicle!
We headed down the beach to get on the ferry and as we drove onto the beach, Sam who was the driver for day 1, discovered that driving on soft sand was alot different than driving on roads! Once off the boat we followed the directions given to us by the garage, which took us to a ridiculously bumpy inland road. After what seemed like a never ending road we arrived at Eurong where we got our goon supplies then went off to Eli Creek. This is where we discovered Phillipe's talent of making animal noises that always caught us off guard. After this we drove up the beach to Mahenomaheno Beach to see a shipwreck and despite the sign saying not to climb on it, we couldnt resist the photo opportunities.
We drove to our campsite for the first night, which was called Dundubara. We did have the option of camping on the beach but campsites have toilets =) As soon as we arrived we set up camp with everyone mucking in, then we sat down to play drinking games with the deadly goon. Team 2 arrived shortly after us and began setting up their camp, prioritising food unlike us who ended up cooking in the dark. Not long into our games the campsite ranger came and asked us to move as a family near us had complained about the noise, which would be fair enough apart from the fact they had watched us set up camp before saying anything. We were moved to a group camping area which actually turned out really good as we were able to do what we wanted with no complaints or disturbances. Not much really to tell what you wouldnt have already guessed apart from Sam falling off the bench backwards (not sure why or how, she just fell back) and Dani making a football out of an empty goon bag.
Day 2 began with everyone feeling less than fresh. Marco was the alarm clock waking us up super early, and Dani woke up to find her tent had collapsed around her! After breakfast we began tidying up but soon decided we needed a rest as you will see from the photos. Marco was designated driver for today and after finally packing up we left for Lake Wabby. As we were driving along the beach we came across our first dingo, not as scary as people think (but we were inside a jeep).
The instructions told us there was a walk to the lake but we didnt realise it was a 40 minute one! Luckily, it was worth it because when we got there we were able to chillax in the lake. After the walk back to the jeep we set off to Central Station which was the campground for that evening. On route we got stuck on a really bumpy road that was fulll of soft sand causing the jeep to sink deeper and deeper. Luckily for us there was a family travelling behind that helped us out by lowering our tyre pressure. At Central Station we set up camp and once again began the evenings event of drinking games. This is where we introduced the 'mine' game that was taught to us by Jamie, Callum and Nick. If someone is asked a question and answers it with the word 'mine', they have to do 10 press ups there and then. This was alot of fun for us as they boys just couldnt get the hang of it.
The next morning it was Gregory's turn to drive so after packing up for the last time we went to Lake McKenzie. We were late setting off as once again the boys took forever to get ready, they are worse than girls! On the way we came across a tour bus that had got stuck in the sand, similar to us the previous day, but as it was so big it had to be towed out. Because our tyres had already been deflated we had no problem getting up the track so arrived at the lake in tact. The lake was amazing, clear white sand and crystal waters, we really didnt want to leave here.
Our ferry back to Rainbow was at 2.30pm so we didnt have that long at Lake McKenzie. Driving to the ferry we saw a turtle lying on the beach and became very excited. Sam and Laura both posed for photos before they realised that it was dead =( We created a no Portugese rule on the way back from the lake, meaning that everytime one of the boys spoke Portugese they had to drink goon. Waiting for the ferry we were all contemplating turning around, no one wanted to go back. Unlike the other groups who didnt always get on, we had an amazing few days with everyone getting on brilliantly. Driving up and down the 75km beach, camping out and seeing the most amazing stars at night, we all wanted to stay! Fraser Island is the largest sand island int he world and with all the amazing lakes and scenery, it is definelty a must do if you're in Australia =)
