Another beautiful sunny day in Malta as we said goodbye. We had a good flight and disembarked in Pisa. The cold air hit us like a wall and we knew that we would not be feeling warmth for quite a while now but at least the sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
Pisa is a small place so we didn't worry about transport. We swung our packs on our backs and headed north for the 2km walk to our hostel. We took the most direct route following the map on the iPhone which makes navigating unfamiliar cities so easy. The place seemed a little sketchy but we arrived at our digs and checked in. It is a beautiful little hostel which is clean, comfortable and nice and warm.
After dumping our bags we set off in search of what we came to see. It was only a short walk before we came upon Piazza Del Duomo and there in all it's crooked glory was the Leaning Tower. It is a thing of beauty. It all looked very much like we were expecting so we set about walking around and spending time taking silly photos of holding up the tower like thousands before us.
As it was late we began to run out of sunlight so we wandered around the piazza taking in the various angles of the tower before heading down the main strip. After having doubts when we turned up the main part of Pisa ended up being beautiful and shows that first impressions aren't always right.
We found a restaurant for some Italian pasta and had some dinner before heading back up the strip and into an indoor market. A store holder asked "where are you from?" "Australia" we answered. "Ahh you have good milk there. The liquid in your cows is beautiful". We had a chuckle because it was so not what we expected him to say after all the standard responses we get to being Aussies.
From there it was back to the hostel to defrost. We're only here for one night and we accomplished what we came here for. Another thing is ticked off the list and now on to the next. We didn't expect much from Pisa except for the tower but leave a little more enlightened. This town definately has some charm.
