And so it was that we did forego breakfast. The group had left 45 mins before us but we are confident in our ability to get around Berlin ourselves. We made our way to the train station & bought our day passes. Then we navigated their trains easily to Brandenburg Gate where we grabbed some coffee & pastries & joined our group. We were taken around by a local guide which made it fascinating to hear a Germans perspective on the war. We have done this tour of Berlin before but there is just so much modern history here that you can't take it in in just one visit. The tour finished at Checkpoint Charlie so Jac, Kez, Deano, Hassan & I ate some currywurst then headed to the museum of terror. This was where the SS was located during the nazis reign & it was dedicated to their rise to power & the atrocities that they committed. After an hour & a half we had to move on from all the death so wandered along looking in shops & taking lots of snaps. At one point we were stopped walking past a currywurst stand. They had a promotion on with an airline so it was free currywurst all round. We then stopped off at the site of the book burnings by the Nazis before heading back to Brandenburg Gate. From here it was out past the Reichstag where we sat on the grass enjoying the sun. We then continued through the park & made our way towards the hotel we stayed in last time we were in Berlin. It was all very different then though as the city was in the grips of a very harsh winter & covered in thick snow. We remember walking these same paths at -10 degrees. It's amazing how different the city looks this time. I must admit it makes traveling a lot easier now. But there was just something special about what we were experiencing then as it was so different to what we were used to, although Jac may beg to differ. Anyways we weren't going to the hotel, we were actually aiming for a little fast food shop we used to go to when we were here before. It was where we were first introduced to currywurst & wanted to return for one last taste. It was only Deano & I who ordered the sausage which wasn't quite as good as Jac & I remember. That's always the danger of returning to somewhere you have great memories of, but it didn't really tarnish our past experiences of the place. Of course let's also not bring attention to the fact that this was our 3rd helping of currywurst for the day. I think I will be sausage free for a couple of weeks now. After this we jumped on the train at Hauptbahnof & headed back home for a rest. There was a pub crawl in the evening but we turned it down in favour of clothes washing. We did head out a little later to Alexanderplatz with Deano & Hassan for a little look around & some food. Dean & I grabbed some currywurst. No, surprisingly we really didn't. Jac had a bit of Chinese but most other shops were closed & we all started to feel the effects of a big day. So we returned back to the hostel to pack & get a nice 6 hours of sleep in. And then it will be bye to Berlin. An amazing city that we really could have been a city that we could have lived in for a while.
