Katherine 3&4 August
Set the alarm for an early start as the plan was to be in Katherine tonight. More driving with a lot of the same to see. Stopped off at the Victoria River Roadhouse for a bite to eat and on the road again. After some 500kms of travelling we got to Katherine where we booked into the Shady Lane Caravan Park. We set up camp and then headed for the Visiter's Information Centre, the wealth knowledge of all things to see. Back to the park and cooked tea and a couple of more drinks. It had been a different day as we had suffered from jet lag because we had crossed over to the Northern Territory where the time zone changed. Any excuse to have an early night to watch another episode of our favourite TV series.
A relaxing start to the morning with a lazy breakfast. We got our walking shoes on and went for a walk up the main street of Katherine. The town was alive with all colors and races and it was interesting to see how relaxed the indigenous people were. They just seemed to be happy lazing around watching everything go by. On the way back to the park we stopped in at the Katherine Hot Springs. This spring was small but seemed perfect for small children to swim in. After lunch we were booked in to go to the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge.
This tour was a bit different because we changed boats between the two pools. Our guide was very informative and gave us plenty of information on the wildlife and flora and history of the Gorge. The tour took about 2 hours and we were again fortunate to see some local freshwater crocodiles. After the tour we headed back to town and we decided to check to High Level Bridge and historic Locomotive. This turned out to be quite disappointing as it was very run down and covered in indigenous graffiti.
