Saturday- after getting up fairly early we went to seethe world's rarest kiwi - the rowi. There is a breeding programme in franz Josef, as this area is only place that this kiwi is found. We saw some 2 month old kiwis in a pretend habitat, where they will stay until they are 1 kilo, then released to a predator free island until they grow too big to be eaten by stoats. Kiwi are bigger than we expected - about the size of a large hen! We then decided to drive up to the Fox glacier in the next village. We parked budget Bertha and went for a walk up the scree slopes to the glacier, it was a 20 minute walk to the said glacier but you weren't supposed to get too close as it was dangerous without a guide. We had wondered about a helicopter ride as being a better way for us to view but changed our minds as it was too pricey. We meandered back to Franz and bumped into the English couple we had first met in Rotorua at the hangi, then again in Weliington! They were on our site so we spent a lovely evening in the bar then barbecuing with them. We fully expect to bump into them again before we leave NZ!
