Rome, Italy. 13th September 2011.
Breakfast in our hotel starts the day before catching the Bus to Cento Celle where we visited San Vincenzo Di Paolo where three months ago Peter's great Aunt Sister Margarita died. This was a convent where Peter's great Aunt devoted her life to God for 75years. Peter had visited his great Aunt 27years ago in 1984 and she died at the age of 99 years and 2 months, on the 4th June 2012. A dear friend said that she had a peaceful death and she had all her faculties until the end.
There was a misconception that Peter's great Aunt was buried at the convent, in fact his great Aunt was buried on the outskirts of Rome "Porta Roma" where there is a cemetery. The Sisters kindly invited us to stay for lunch and their hospitality was extremely generous, a four course meal of soup, pasta, salad, then main course cutlets and mashed potato followed by fruit and coffee and biscotti. A hospitality we would never get anywhere else. The sister's where very generous in allowing Peter to keep some of his Aunts possessions as a keepsake.
After lunch Sister Angie and the Mother Superior took Peter and I to the cemetery where we visited the grave of Sister Margarita (Peter's great Aunt). After Peter said a few prayers, a sweep around the grave and a couple of photographs we returned to the centre of Rome where we thanked the Sisters for their hospitality and then caught the subway to do some sight seeing. We visited Piazza del Poppolo, Piazza Di Spangna and the beautiful Trevi Fountain where we threw three coins each into the fountain.
Peter and I also did some shopping along Via Del Corso and I think I have already gone over my baggage limit! Ouch!
We returned back to our accommodation via the Fontana del Tritone by subway, emptied out our new purchases before going out for dinner.
For dinner we went to the "la Famiglia" restaurant which was opposite our hotel. Don't you hate it when a street musician plays at the restaurant and then walks around asking for a donation!
Dinner was pleasant and so was Peter's conversation about life expectancy. I think he was trying to work out through the family genes how long I was going to live for! I think the connection of conversation was something to to with his great Aunt living to the age of 99.
By the way, if you want to get around Rome buy a three day travel pass which gets you on all buses, trams and metro trains. It only cost us 11 Euro each.
I think it's pass our bed time,
Buona Notte.
