Tromso is the first stop on our Southbound journey and is still well inside the Arctic Circle. This morning continued the "dull and dismal" theme with mist and clouds obscuring much of the view and we feared that the day would not change. However, by lunch, the sky had begun to brighten and there was a hint of sunshine at times. We set off on our tour of the city at about 2.30 and made our first stop at the University Museum. Not very large, but it does tell the story of the Sami People and their fight to be recognised. They've really had it tough, these folk but they now have rights and a parliament of their own to represent them.
We then made our way to the cable car station and upwards to the top of the mountain. By this time, the weather had improved and we were treated to spectacular views over the city and the surroounding mountains. There is still a fair bit of snow about and it won't clear before July. It was cold with a strong breeze, but the hot chocolate and the waffles helped to warm us up!
Back at ground level and onto the next stop - the magnificent Arctic "Ice" Cathedral! The building is constructed of Concrete, but is magnificent both on the outside and inside and boasts a wondrous stained glass window and two sets of organ pipes. Stunning in its simplicity and beautiful.
All too soon though, we made our way back to the ship and dinner - another four courses!! The food is magnificent and all the staff are helpful and smiling. I shall have to go back on my diet when we get home!
Tomorrow is a full day's excursion to the Lofoten Islands (with lunch thrown in) and it promises to be another great day.
