Well, what can we say...finally made it! Didn't think it would be happen at first with our flight from Manchester being cancelled because of a crash landing down at heathrow. Which we didn't find out about until arriving at manchester airport!
So after a hurried and tearful goodbye at the airport with the parents, Banny came to the rescue and raced us down the M6 in what he calls 'the
Beast', but what we call 'the most frightening car journey in our life'. We eventuaully made it to Heathrow just in time to check in and have a quick beer before saying our last goodbye to michael :-(
Whilst waiting for our plane in the departure lounge, our luck continued - Claire was asked by a little Indian woman, who happened to work there to stand to one side as she went to the bathroom. She started to whisper and didn't make much sense until Claire heard the words "I will give you money, but please don't tell anyone!" At this point, Claire decided to slowly walk away!
After waiting another half hour Dave decided he wanted a burger...no burger shops at Heathrow. Had to put up with a 20 quid butty from 'Pret de Mange'. All going well so far...
Our luck continued, as 15 minutes to boarding, we heard over the tanoy that we couldn't board for another hour as our gate was suddenly being used to board passengers on a flight to Kuwait!
Eventually, we boarded and our luck finally seemed to change...not really - we had to wait on the runway for 2 hours before we could take off!
Thankfully, the flight wasn't all that bad. We were sat next to a sound guy called Simon who was from Australia, but had been living in London for the last 3 years - it also turned out that he actually knew one Claire's friends, Vikki. Small world.
After a very smooth landing in Bangkok (compliments to the Qantas pilot), we collected our bags, went through passport control with no problems whatsoever.
Our taxi driver, Kamron, from the airport was brilliant. With his limited English and our non existant Thai, we discussed politics, Royalty, train times, safety tips, religion and even shared a laugh when he clipped some lady's bum with his wing mirror! He just laughed out loud and shouted 'BOTTOM'!
We checked into our basic but clean and friendly guesthouse at about 8pm. Our room consists of a bed, shower, half a shelf and a lovely view looking directly into somebody's bedroom, but for a fiver each a night, what do you expect?!
We had a shower and got changed before heading out into Bangkok for something to eat. There are 100s and 100s of street kitchens which all offer about 4 dishes each, mainly Pad Thai (3 types of noodles, beansprouts, green stuff, spices and garlic) with a choice of meat or fish. We both ordered the chicken and spring rolls to share, which we were unable to finish as there was way to much - shame really as it was an extortionate one pound for it all!
Following our tea (sat down in a shop doorway) we passed a woman holding a huge live rabbit and a guy taking his elephant for a walk! Which is obviously quite normal...
Khao San Road was our next stop, didnt really know what to expect and to be honest would most like to compare it with a standard 18-30s holiday strip. Good to experience though and a great place to people watch.
We then ventured back to our guesthouse, where the whole area is relaxed, full of backpackers, restaurants, street kitchens and bars and a great place to relax with the Thai locals!
Knackered though now for being awake 48 hours but love what we've seen so far!
Will start to put photo's on when we've seen more.
