We got up early this morning as we wanted to be ready to go at around 7.30am. We got packed and made our way downstairs, we were even too early for the hotel, there was no one to take the key. Someone got up eventually and James nipped to get some fruit for breakfast and a tuk tuk to take us to the train station. He was back really quickly, we got to the train station and nipped to the ATM before finding our platform. We sat for a little while, the train pretty much came on time which is really good for India. When the trains come into the stations they are so long that they go quite quickly, our carriage was quite near the front so we had to go quite far. The train sounded its horn before we'd found our carriage and then slowly started to move so we had to jump on the train moving and work out where we should be afterwards (that wasn't the most fun thing I've ever done). We were sort of stuck for a while while with our bags on our backs wondering how to get to our seats. People fill every space on a train even the aisles, we decided to go for it and move through the next carriage. Luckily at the other side there was an attendant and he confirmed that the next carriage was the one we wanted. We weren't far off! We found our seats, James then got a coffee for 7p which he was rather pleased at and we sat back for the rest of the journey. We are travelling to the region of Tamil Nadu where we're going to Kanyakumuri which is at the very southern tip of India where three seas meet. While we were on the train we saw some great views out of the window including some flamingoes and the huge mountains sticking up through the clouds the closer we got to Kanyakumuri. When we arrived, there were loads of tuk tuk drivers ready to grab any tourist coming off the train, our hotel was only 1km away so we weren't that bothered about a ride but one guy wouldn't take us for less than 50 rupees even though we had 45 in change. There was a taxi driver who said he'd take us for that along with a couple of men who'd also got off the train. They drive proper old school cars for taxis with space for three in front, the driver and the two guys in the front and we got in the back. It didn't take long to get to the hotel, it was huge from the outside. After checking in we were impressed with the view we've got, it looks straight out over the sea. The room had (along with a bed) two chairs in it so we moved them to the huge window and looked out for a little while. To the right we could see two islands, one which had a temple on it and the other had an enormous statue. There were ferries which were running to the island and back with visitors. To the left we saw a really long jetty which people were walking out onto. We decided we'd get some lunch as we'd had no breakfast then have a walk out towards the ferry. We got out tickets for 30p each and waited to get on. When there were quite a few people we were led outside, there was a huge pile of life jackets (some of which looked well passed useable!) everyone had to pick one up and take it on board. Once the ferry was full we set off holding onto our life jackets, the sea was so very rough, it was really windy so we got thrown all over the place and splashed with sea water coming in on numerous occasions. We made it across in about 10 minutes, when across another ticket had to be bought for 20p each this time to go and look around the temple. Shoes had to be handed in at the start of the steps to be collected on your way out. The place was really nice to walk around, although without shoes the concrete floor was really hot!! After looking round for a while we got the ferry back, it was a similar experience to the earlier journey bouncing along on the waves. After getting off we went back to our hotel for a little while. We went out later to watch the sunset, Kanyakumuri is a rare place where you can watch both the sunset and the sunrise. We wandered down some streets to find the best place to watch it set. We noticed that they have a viewing tower to watch from. We went up the spirals of concrete and yes it was a great place to watch from. We got some great pictures, on the walk back we went past an aquarium place which they called a fish exhibition. It had two fish tanks you could see from the outside with some pretty wierd looking fish. So we decided to go inside for a look at the cost of 20p each. There were some really cool looking fish and some enormous fish in a pool at the back of the place. They even had a tank full of turtles. After this we made our way back to the hotel and chilled until an early bed setting the alarm or sunrise.
