We got up and had breakfast then got some bits together to go to the temple festival this afternoon. We got to the travel shop for 1pm and were directed to the bus that would be taking us. We sat in the bus for 40 minutes while more and more people got on. When the bus was full we set off. One side of the bus was three seats wide and the other two seats but the individual seats were really small. Rather than the journey taking one hour to get there it took us two. We pulled up and saw two elephants pass us and walk down a road. At this point everyone got off the bus we were pointed in the direction of the elephants and told to be back at the bus at 6.30pm. So everyone walked in this direction for around 20 minutes until we were in the village where the festival was happening. We walked past elephants in people's front gardens and walking down the road. There was a temple in the middle of the village and around that there were elephants lined up. So it was about 4.30pm by this point and we noticed the guy from the bus and asked him about toilets, his answer was pretty much ask at local houses if you can use theirs. He asked at one house for us but they said there was something wrong with the water supply, we decided to leave it and find somewhere later. We also asked him what exactly will happen at the festival, he said at around 5.30pm all of the elephants will come out. He also said that it finishes at about 6pm so instead if getting back to the bus for 6.30pm, 7pm would be better. We walked up and down, there were some stalls to look at and lots of people here. There was a bridge running to the town and most people started congregating on there so we waited there. A long line of elephants all decorated and with people riding them came across the bridge, there were men playing drums and women and children following with candles. The elephants were taken down to the river and walked through it, out the other side and then taken round to take a place at the temple. It was done in groups of elephants so before the next group we went down to where they would come out of the river to get a better look. This was much better but there was a point which a local guy came up to us and told us the next elephant wasn't well so we should stand back. People started moving back so we followed, it seemed to stop for a while after getting out of the river but other than that it seemed fine. Then we got a little closer to the next ones coming, one started moving to the side in the water and at this point locals started to run back out of the way, they obviously knew something we didn't but we did follow! That one also seemed fine. We went back up to the temple where the rest of the elephants were lining up, I'm not sure exactly how many there actually were but there were supposed to be 50 elephants there altogether. It was really special to have seen this. At about 6pm we thought we'd start our way back to the bus as we'd seen everything and the festival had finished. On the way back we saw two women and a little girl outside a house so we asked if we could use their toilet. They were really friendly and said of course, James offered them some money but they wouldn't take it. As we were leaving a man came from the house with a plate of bananas and insisted we took some. We eventually found where the bus was parked and a few other people on the way. We sat on the bus for half an hour ish then before everyone was back it set off a little up the road, I think we went back with everyone!! The journey back wasn't the best, another two hour journey but this time we had a set of two sets, James was stood in the aisle a lot of the way cos he was so squashed! After getting back (two hours late) we quickly went to get changed at the hotel and went for some tea. Just before we left the restaurant I managed to get a quick Skype conversation in with verity, which was really nice.
