Today we had 2 new towns to explore so it was off to the train station for our 10.35 train to Luzern, just an hour away from Zurich but once again set on a river mouth & lake. We put our bags in a locker for the few hours we were here & started off with a walk along the river which was lined with old buildings & adorned with covered wooden bridges dating back 600 years. The water tower in the middle of the river & winged by a covered bridge is the landmark of Luzern. Further along the river we crossed another covered bridge & set off up hill to climb the old city walls. Surprisingly there was no entry cost to climb up inside the towers & along the top of the wall. This being Switzerland, one of the towers had a large clock on the outside & climbing inside the tower you could see the 8m pendulum & workings of the clock. Lucky it wasn't colder or it might have felt like we had joined the nights watch & were patrolling 'The Wall' in Games of Thrones! Having worked up an appetite we wandered down through more busy cobblestone streets & pleasant flower decorated squares before finding a place for lunch along the edge of the river. We sat undercover below old bluestone arches out of the sun as it was another warm day, beneath our feet were cobblestones which made me wonder how many people had walked along this city path, how many peasants & merchants & squires? Pondering done we went to see the Lion Monument which is to commemorate the Swiss soldiers who died in the French Revolution. A wounded lion has been carved out of the middle of a huge rock face just up from the old town. With our train to Interlaken pending we went to retrieve our bags having enjoyed our few hours in Luzern. It was 2 hours to Interlaken which flew by with each sweeping corner revealing views of snow capped mountains & crystal clear lakes. Arriving into Interlaken Ost the clouds were growing & it started raining about a block from our accommodation. We were staying at Arnolds B&B & on the door was an envelope addressed to us with the key to our room which was small but adequate. As the rain was persisting we hung out for a bit in the hope it would stop then braved the showers to go for a wander into town to have a look at the shops & ask some questions about the Jungfrau trip. We were pretty much decided thanks to the weather forecast that we would have to bite the bullet & get up early to get the best possible conditions at the top. Before returning to our accommodation we stopped to share a pizza before rushing back through the now persistent rain for an early night.
