Our ticket said we should arrive into Copenhagen at 10.07 so we scheduled in an 8am breakfast with the train attendant. The breakfast was quite liberal with cereal, juice, coffee, ham, cheese, jam & breads. We still had quite some time to wait after breakfast however as the train arrived in 2hrs late at noon. With only the rest of the day to explore Copenhagen we quickly found our hotel, which for $135 a night was pretty much a Danish Formule 1 with bunk beds & a roll out bed which butts up to the bottom bunk to become a double. It was also a very warm room with no heating or cooling despite the only moderate day outside. We quickly got out to explore, firstly crossing over the river heading for Christiania which is a hippy commune that has survived from the 70s but now is just covered in graffiti, full of stray dogs & smelling like pot. When I came to Copenhagen in 2001 I did a guided tour of Christiania & even in that time it seems to have degraded & is far less orderly than before. Neither of us particularly impressed we crossed back over to the city side & after searching for something reasonably priced for lunch we settled on McDonalds. From here we walked over to Nyhavn which is a long canal with pretty buildings filled with restaurants lining each side & lots of wide canal boats doing cruises. For only 40 kroner ($8) a 1hr canal cruise was about the best value thing in town so we sat back as we cruised past the different palaces, modern buildings & parks which line the many small island areas that make up Copenhagen. After the cruise we walked up past the royal palaces just in case Princess Mary was home for a cuppa & then onto the Kastellet park to see the famous Little Mermaid statue & citadel. Getting a little weary after our disrupted sleep on the train we pushed on to Rosenborg Castle set in a lovely colourful public park and finally past the round tower which houses the worlds oldest observatory. Our feet were definitely dragging as we followed the pedestrian streets back towards the hotel. Unfortunately as there wasn't much around the hotel we had to venture out again for dinner after a few hours, ending up at an all you can eat pizza place which we certainly deserved after walking 17.5 kms over the course of the afternoon .
