Off to Bratislava, Slovakia today for a day trip so Sean could tick off another country. We took a tram to the Hauptbahnhof for a 10am train but it was going to a different Bratislava station so we waited 20mins for one going to the main station. The trip only took about an hour and then it was a bit of a walk, but luckily downhill to the old town area. Along the way we passed the presidential palace with guards standing by & then entered the pedestrian streets of the old town just as it began to drizzle. It always puts such a dampener on things when it rains whilst travelling. Hoping it would pass quickly we stopped at a coffee shop on the main square where I had a cappuccino (although it was black coffee with some froth on top) & we used the free wifi. Looking a little clearer we went past the tourist info for a better map and then weaving back through the cobbled stone old town we started up the hill to the castle. Once we had climbed to the top we discovered it was closed on Mondays but we could still walk around the more 1900s rebuilt building and also take in the views over Bratislava & the Danube river. Walking back down on the road we came across a microbrewery (we have a knack for chancing upon these) so we decided to stop for lunch. I had a delicious vegetable stuffed zucchini and we tried the 3-4 beers they had on tap between us. The clouds were beginning to clear so after wandering back through parts of the old town we crossed the bridge to take the train from the other station. It was quite a walk as despite being a similar distance to town the walk was along the edge of a free way so we had to zig zag over exit ramps & then wander past commission style flats before wearily arriving at the station for our 4.30 train. On the up side there was a Tesco express nearby where I managed to get some non sugary muesli. Back in Vienna it was back to the hotel then a quick venture out for some tasty takeaway noodles for dinner.
