The alarm woke us early for our 6.35 train from Interlaken Ost to start our journey up the Jungfrau. We grabbed some breakfast from the shop to have a morning picnic on the scenic 20 minute trip to Lauterbrunnen. We travelled alongside a ice blue fast running river bringing melted glacier water down to the lakes. Our next leg was to Kleine Scheidegg via Wengen where I think Jane & I travelled as far as 4.5 years ago on my last visit here. This section took about 50mins & was the first rack rail with some quiet steep sections. The views over the valley & mountains became more & more spectacular as the few morning clouds cleared. The final section was close to an hour, much of which was in tunnels. The train just kept going up & up with two stops inside the tunnel to quickly check out the views from the panoramic windows before jumping back on the train. Arriving at the top we got ahead of the tour group crowds & headed straight for the Sphinx Observatory with 360 views over the glacial mountain tops of the Jungfrau as well as the rows of mountain ranges & green valleys down below. Having the view to ourselves for even just a few minutes was amazing although both of us were feeling the effects of the altitude. Taking it slow we stepped out onto the outside deck to once again be wowed by the views. Once the crowds descended we went next through a very touristy tunnel of illuminated edelweiss & cow statues then onto travelators which passed pictures of the Italian workers building the Jungfrau train with dramatic background music to set the scene. Next stop was outside to the plateau of snow you could walk out onto to see the still incredible view from yet another angle. Having had enough of feeling slightly woozy we took the 10.30 train back down through the tunnel having had just over an hour & a half admiring the stunning vistas. I wasn't feeling very good most of the way down, even once we had changed trains at Kleine Scheidegg to head towards Grindelwald. This direction was a serious descend for a train which without braking would have been a roller coaster. Once again the journey presented new views over the Swiss valleys. At Grindelwald we decided we should eat & found a restaurant near the station with a 'tagesmenu' (menu of the day) of Cream of Tomato soup, a bowl of crunchy mixed salad & thin pork medallions topped with bacon & rosemary with a plain savoury risotto on the side. I enjoyed mine with a delicious peppermint ice tea which certainly helped wash down all the food which we hadn't expected to be quiet so copious but amazing value for 20CHF. Rolling back to the train we resisted napping until we got back to our room in Interlaken. Later on we went for another wander through town where Sean bought a stylish Swiss military watch. We picked up a supermarket picnic to enjoy for dinner over looking the Hohe-Matte (big grassed area) & the descending para gliders. Once the bugs started appearing we headed back for an early night ready for more amazing adventures tomorrow.
