With a full day in port & our research telling us there wasn't loads to do in Torshavn we didn't rush out of bed but were off the ship about 10 am. As we were in an industrial port we had to take a shuttle bus to the gates which were just on the edge of town. Across the little harbour of bobbing boats was the old town known as Tinganes which has had a parliament for 1000 years- the oldest in Europe. The wooden houses there now were painted in traditional black with grass growing on the roof for insulation. As we wandered further into town we wondered what the large pointy building we could see on the hill was so walked up to find out- of course being on the hill it ended up being a church. Back down into town we still had some time before our ferry to Nolsoy (another island opposite Torshavn) at 12.30. We walked uphill once again to a small monument set amongst a small green paddock with some native Faroe sheep. Next was the fort right near the port & some climbing on the rocks below. A little early we got our tickets for the ferry- we could only go there & straight back due to the timetable although it would have been nice to go walking & exploring on the rugged island for a few hours- if only tourist information for the Faroe's was easier to find! It was a fairly big ferry as it also transported cars across but only took 20 mins each way. All day we had been having the feeling that we were a long way from home & a long way from anywhere- looking out from the ferry at the rugged cliffs & quaint community of houses on Nolsoy reiterated that feeling! A quick lunch back on the ship we headed back into town to take the free bus around town just to see the sights. Our last stop before departing was a small cafe to try the locally brewed beer, in operation since 1888. The ship set sail at five & we were soon leaving the islands & any civilisation behind. Tonight's buffet was tex mex themed & a tasty change from the restaurant. Despite not having seen a puffin yet our room attendant had folded our towels into a puffin shape which was very cute. With the sun not setting until 11.30pm we decided we would head to the high spirits bar to see the cover band but after a short set the entertainment director had the whole bar involved in a music game show before the band returned- I was glad of our table in the corner so we could watch all the crazy Brits from a distance.
