The first stop on the Barcelona Tourist trail today was Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's very different take on church design. At €13 to get in we just had a quick look at the unusual modernist outside before wandering back towards Las Ramblas via the Casa Batllo, another of Gaudi's buildings with a wavey kind of effect on the facade. We continued down into the Barri Gothic area and found some lunch near the cathedral. From here we followed lane ways until we came to the waterfront and tried to stay out of the hot sun as we walked around Port Vell to the beach area where we stopped for a well deserved icecream. We wanted to take the cable car from the beach to Mont Juc but the line was quite slow & directly in the sun so after 10 mins we gave up and headed back to La Rambla where I left Sean with a drink at a cafe to go see what was at the market. It was only a food market, not souvenirs etc as I'd thought so I was soon back drinking my expensive apple juice (I'd asked for a glass & they bought out a 500 ml one which cost €5.50!!) before we set off to find a tapas bar that had been recommended to us. In a small square in the Barri Gothic we found a seat inside at Bar de Pi & enjoyed a cold beer and the first lot of tapas- spicy sautéed mushrooms, a beef croquette & a montedito (bread with cheese, an anchovy & an olive). Next we had delicious calamari, patatas bravas (fried potato cubes with sauce) then some fried sweet peppers & an empanada & olives wrapped in anchovies on a stick. It was all very tasty & much cheaper than elsewhere as all the food only cost €24. Bellies happy we returned to our accommodation.
