A big day exploring today so we were up and out the door to get our included breakfast from the cafe around the corner. It was only a coffee/juice & croissant but at least my cappuccino hit the spot. The first stop was the biggest- The Colosseum! We rounded the corner and there it was looming at the end of the street. The line up wasn't too bad & then we were free to wander the ancient stadium where 50,000 spectators watched gladiators fight to the death. Wandering along the mighty stone pillars which support it gives you a lot of respect for the Roman Empire. This was further enhanced when we then visited the ruins of Palatine hill & the Roman Forum which is laid out over a substantial area and although impressive left us weary as we neared the exit. In search of lunch we sat down at a touristy cafe overlooked by the imposing Monument of Vittorio Emanuele but the waiter didn't seem too interested in serving us so we decided to walk a bit further out of the touristy area & found a cheaper, friendlier cafe about 5 mins away where we had a very refreshing beer with butter & sage ravioli followed by coffee to finish for €8.90. We continued on to the Pantheon with its ageing exterior but immaculately kept marble interior, then sidetracked to the Temple of Adriano and finally to Piazza Navona filled with restaurants, fountains & artists. Our feet were getting weary but we still had more to see crossing the Sant Angelo bridge to the Castle of the same name then turning left towards the Vatican City & its heart- St Peters Basilica. The sun was out today, with shining blue sky so we sought some shade as we entered St Peters square for some photos. We couldn't go inside as we both needed long pants & it was too warm to wear them all day just for this so we pressed on to find some transport back to our accommodation settling on the tram which dropped us just 10 mins walk away. It was laundry time again, luckily one was right around the corner & they did it for us so we picked up a light dinner of salad & strawberries at the Spar to enjoy with some beers in our room before picking up our washing & getting ready for our early-ish flight tomorrow.
