This morning we were getting out of Naples & moving on to Rome. Taking the regional train it took 2hrs to arrive into Rome, Termini from where it was only a short couple of blocks to our accommodation. Despite only being a little after 12.30 we managed to get our room pretty much straight away along with a big pile of keys as we were staying in a guesthouse which was pretty much just 'rent a room' style. As we got closer to Rome the clouds had got darker & darker and it was steadily raining when we got off the train. With only today & tomorrow to explore the many sites of Rome we got our jackets & umbrellas at the ready and set off in the drizzly rain. Luckily it was starting to clear up and as we wandered towards the Spanish steps the sun even broke through the clouds. We stopped for lunch at a cafe for sandwiches which ended up being nearly as much as a sit down meal- grr, rip off service charges!! Further on into the mist of tourists we came to the bottom of the Spanish steps and climbing to the top we were rewarded with views over the rooftops of Rome. Following the street on the ridge of the hill we continued on to Piazza del Popolo, the grandest of Rome's entrances which at its centre stands an obelisk obviously pinched from Egypt once upon a time. Next stop was the Mausoleum of Augusto & a quick look at the River Travere then onto the Trevi Fountain, as always crammed with tourists. We stopped for a drink (as much to use the toilets as public ones don't seem to exist here) & then as it began to steadily rain again we returned to our accommodation until dinner. We had pizza once more, this time the thin crust Roman style at a Pizzeria just around the corner then back to our room to listen to the thunder hoping it would clear by morning.
