My fair Verona, where this story starts. Only being restricted to regional trains with our pass we had to wait until 11.16 to travel the 1hr 25mins to Verona where we were spending just a few hours before going to Padua. It was almost 1pm by the time we arrived and only having had coffee & croissant for breakfast at the hotel we were already hungry. Just near the station we found a kebab shop, although what we thought would be a quick lunch stop ended up taking over 10mins just to make a kebab. On our way eventually we walked into town past the moated city walls & onto the Arena which is similar to Rome's colosseum but smaller. The next stop on the tourist trail was Juliet's house & the famous balcony where tourists packed the small courtyard for a picture & a grope of the statues left breast. Quickly getting out of there we continued towards the river & the carnovaggio (bridge & military compound) through picturesque streets of houses with balconies just like Juliet's. With just enough time to get to the station for our train to Padua we wandered back through the narrow streets. Another hour twenty on the slow regional train & we arrived to meet Cecilia, the Italian assistant from school last year, who lives nearby. Whilst gossiping and catching up she showed us around the squares, churches & shopping streets of the old part of Padua. After ending up in the main square which has a ring of statues & a small moat running around it we sat down for a drink before returning to the station about 7.30pm where we got a train back to Mestre almost straight away. Wanting something quick for dinner we decided on the Chinese restaurant in the main street which was full of the local Chinese community & was very good. Yummy fried rice with simple stir-fry vegetables & some lemon chicken really hit the spot before we returned to the hotel for our last night before heading to Naples tomorrow.
