Once we got organised this morning we made sure we checked the street side maps whenever we passed one so that we didn't get lost again finding our way into the centre of Brugge. Passing a couple of colossal churches which tower above the city scape we finally made it to the Grot Markt of Brugge which was actually having a market day of fresh produce. It was also crowded with tourists who wandered all over the road without a care for the horse & carriages or cars making their way through the square. The buildings here, just as in Brussels were magnificently presented and although on first look they seemed similar in style to the Brussels square in fact the ornate buildings of Brugge had its own style with a zigzag shape at the tip of the tall skinny buildings & many houses had gargoyles & faces carved above the windows to keep away the bad spirits. The most prominent building in the square was the belfry which dominated the south end protruding 80 metres into the sky. One side of the square also housed a gothic style town hall & post office. After a quick look we left the square to get away from the crowds passing through the Burg which contained more exquisite buildings decorated ornately with gold leaf highlights & in the direction of Da Half Maan (The half moon) Brewery. We decided on lunch before a brewery tour & both had the 3 course lunch special with mushroom soup, mussel/pippie spaghetti & chocolate mouse for €16. We also tasted the beers which we wouldn't taste on the tour but as they ranged between 7.5 & 11% I wasn't very keen on any of them but found they tasted better if you didn't breath in the strong vapour. At 3pm we did the brewery tour which was worthwhile as it still contained original brewing machinery & tanks off set with pictures of elements of the brewery as it is today. The tour wound up through the different levels of the brewery building & at the top we could go out onto the roof to take in the view over Brugge. After tasting the Blonde beer at the end of the tour we went to see Brugge from a different angle by taking a boat ride along the canals. The boat was rather full but it was still an enjoyable 30min ride along some parts of the canal system we had not yet seen. It was only about 5pm so we wandered the streets of Brugge a while longer before circling back around to the Grot Markt again which was less than half as busy with the market packed up & the day tourists gone. There was still plenty of people around to sit & do some people watching, including a couple having a pretty obvious domestic. Eventually we headed back to our hotel via subway for a quick, light dinner.
