Although we had to make it to Brugge by tonight we ended up spending most of the day in Brussels seeing the sights. The supermarket in the station was doing renovations so they weren't much good for breakfast stuff so we checked out then got a quick breakfast in a cafe at the station. Instead of walking into town we took the metro which was more like an underground tram system. We arrived into the Grot Markt (Grand Market) just in time for the start of a 'free' walking tour by the same company as the Dublin one so decided to join in & learn some more about Brussels & Belgium. The walking tour went for about 3 hours & covered the history of Belgium, comics such as Tin Tin, the notorious Manekan Pis (the peeing baby fountain) & the bravery of the Belgian troops in WW1. The Grot Markt where it started was a rectangle of beautiful 17th century guildhalls which are offset by the earlier gothic styles of the museum & town hall. The streets which branched off from each corner were winding cobblestone streets, many jammed tight with restaurants & some decorated with more modern murals if famous Belgian comics. Of course we passed a few towering churches & more stately old buildings, finishing up in the royal gardens. We were quite hungry by the end of the tour so stopped for a quick, classically Belgian lunch of frites topped with mayonnaise, ketchup & onion. Our next stop was a bar near the centre of Brussels called Delirium which stocks over 2000 beers although we focused on just trying a couple of the Trappist beers which are iconic to Belgium. The beer is always so high percent though, around 7/8% is quite normal so you really can't try too many in one siting. From here we walked back to the Pullman to pick up our bags and jumped on a train to Brugge, about an hour away. We were once again staying pretty much in the station but this time at the lower end of the scale in the Ibis Budget which was only $50 a night. Although the station was about 20mins walk from the very centre of town we decided to go for a wander to find some dinner instead of just hanging around the hotel. We were heading for the main square but Brugge being a medieval city the windy streets got us turned in the wrong direction so when we found a little square with some restaurants we decided to stop. We both got the menu of the day with mussels in cream sauce for entree, then I had the Flemish beef stew & Sean had a Vol-a-vent. We both had icecream to finish. From here we were able to cut along the pretty canal & it wasnt too far back to the hotel for the evening.
