We still had until noon to use our Salzburg card so we were up early ish for another breakfast with a view before taking the bus into town to firstly see the Residenz of the archbishops right next to the square towering cathedral. Once again it was room after room of opulence & another long winded audio guide. The most interesting thing was the balustrade on the double stairs in the main hall had been tuned so that they could be played like chimes. After the over the top rooms we next ventured to the Catacombs which were dug up into the rock face of a steep cliff. We climbed up inside the rock walls to have a look but there wasn't much inside bar a few altars. The catacombs were on the edge of the small cemetery which backs onto St Peters & is also where the Sound of Music cemetery scene was shot. From here we followed the street along the bottom of the cliff to the lifts which carry you up through the rock to the museum of modern art on top of the hill. We just quickly went up to have a look at the view over Salzburg. Just along on the same street was the House of Nature but first we cut down to the river to see if we could get a ticket for the noon cruise up the river. Luckily we managed to get a ticket despite our pass running out at 12. We returned to the House of Nature for a fruitless search for the case of weird deformed animals they used to have. Boarding the boat, it was only about 20mins up river then 20 back with not much commentary but it was a few more euros value we got out of our cards. In all we got €88 in entry fees plus public transport for the €26 we paid. Wandering back towards the station we stopped for a quick lunch of curry before collecting our bags and taking the train from Salzburg to Vienna- about 2.5hrs away. Our hotel was less than 10mins walk from Westbahnhof and after a busy morning we just lounged around a bit only venturing back to the station for McDonalds & breakfast supplies.
