Today we had a big day planned so lucky we had a hearty breakfast buffet on the top floor of the Ramada overlooking Salzburg to get us going. We bought our 24hr Salzburg Card for €26 & planned to get as much value out of it as possible! Our first stop was the furtherest from town as we were heading up the 1700metre high Untersberg peak on the very steep cable car. There was a few white knuckle moments as the cable car ascended up beside sheer cliffs & just missed the top of peaks as it made the 10min trip to the top. The views were amazing & you could see right to the horizon past Salzburg & majestic mountain ranges off in the other direction. There were lots of Austrians all dressed to go off hiking but we had other sites to see so we descended then caught the bus to the Salzburg Zoo. We had lunch here & I managed to get a proper veggie fix with my €5 salad bar plate. After this we wandered past the various animals like monkeys, pumas, rhinos, zebras & a tapir who was very excited about his watermelon. The bottom end of the zoo backed onto Hellbrunn Palace which was our next stop. We walked through the elegant manicured grounds past the grid shaped pond & got our ticket for a tour of the trick fountains that the day palace was famous for. We were lucky that it was a rather warm sunny day as by the time we had been shown the fun of the various water driven trick fountains we had been sprayed with water a few times. Somewhat dried off we took the bus back into town to visit our final attraction of the day- The Hohensalzburg Fortress which is central Europe's largest surviving fort dating from the 11th century. To get up to the hill top fortress we took the funicular which climbs steeply up the sharp cliff. From here we had magnificent views over Salzburg with the white fortress imposing above us. Climbing the stairs up into the first courtyard we found the doorway for the guided tour with long winded audio guide which took us through some of the older parts of the battlements & up to the top of one of the towers. From here we just had enough time for a quick look around some of the inner rooms of the archbishops of Salzburg before they closed for the evening. Taking the funicular back down it was just through the church courtyard to one of my favourite restaurants- St Peters. St Peters is the oldest restaurants in Europe and has been around since 802, I've eaten here both other times I've visited Salzburg. We chose to dine in the cavernous stone canopies off the courtyard & both ordered the Wiener Schnitzel which came with a piece of lemon wrapped in gauze to stop the pips & cranberry sauce. We were also presented with a selection of infused olive oils to go with our side salad. Despite it being a splash out at about €30 each inc a beer each it was a delicious dinner and a memorable experience. After such a busy day we walked back through the small streets of the old town to get a bus back to the hotel for the night.
