Today was a palace day but first we had washing to do (boring!). With so many palaces from the Hapsburg empire to explore in Vienna we thought we would visit them all in one go. The first, Schloss Schonbrunn, was the largest with over 1,400 rooms & massive gardens with water fountains & decorative flower beds over a couple of acres. By the time we had wandered through the different areas of the gardens we weren't very motivated to see more opulent rooms inside so instead we took the U-Bahn into town to find some lunch, settling on one last schnitzel before we head to Italy tonight. Refilled we walked along the long wall of Belvedere Palace then walked down through the not quite so lavish gardens to the bottom entrance where we found a tram to the last palace for the day- Hofburg. This one we had passed on our first day in Vienna & it really oozes power over the central area with its large crescent design and imposing pillars & balconies. To finish up our day we took the number 2 tram that does most of a loop around the city centre then continues out to the Danube. After a quick look at the mighty river we took the tram back into the city then out to the hotel to collect our bags. Tonight we were taking the overnight train to Venice so after a quick subway dinner we jumped on the train. We didn't have a deluxe cabin with bathroom this time but still only the two of us & a small covered basin then very little room for anything else. We still received water & sparkling white wine plus a little bag with a towel & soap. We put our order in for breakfast, then soon asked the attendant to make the seat into beds before turning in.
