The Calico Ghost Town, probably the largest intact Ghost Town in America, supposedly. Although it's now a tourist attraction so I don't quite see how it's deserted. Anyway, it was a few miles down the road and it was an attraction on Route 66. First, after we were ready and had taken the tent down in the sweltering heat we set off for the post office to send a post card to Marie's dad. We had a jack in the box breakfast again because it was cheap and then we set off towards the Ghost Town. We arrived within a few minutes and paid to get in and parked up. The heat was intense today, so any walking was not going to be fun. But we walked through Calico and everything was left how it was, near enough, the buildings, the furniture in a typical house of the time and even right down to some of the products that were used. The town became deserted after the lapse in silver pricing, it cut by half, and the silver was the main reason that the town was thriving. There was a mine in the hills with their break room still intact with chairs and tables. Anyway, the place was now thriving again and all the buildings had been converted into shops of some kind. There was a general store, a saloon, a museum and even a shop just for dogs!! The lady in there took a real shine to me, and told marie she was the lucky one in the relationship instead of me for once, I liked her. They had dog ice cream, dog sauces and even dog crisps!! We walked up to the ridge to get a scenic view of the town and took some pictures, we investigated the old school house but that was closed. So we walked back down the Main Street and went into the fudge shop and the candle shop. But I think by now, we were just doing that purely because of the air conditioning in there. Anyway, we made sure we looked in all the shops and then went back to the car, this drive would be taking us to LA, another place I was really excited for. We had a KOA booked again for a few nights over the weekend, but chances are we will stay for longer. Especially as it's cheap. We arrived at the KOA to be told that there was free continental breakfast, I was even more excited for tomorrow now. We set the tent up in what can only be described as an ants nest, and then marie took a little nap, and I read my book for a while. Looking forward to LA tomorrow, but it will also be the day we finally finish Route 66. Meaning we had already driven the whole length of it, definitely mixed emotions.
