Today we would be returning to the Mojave Desert to do a spot of trekking as we weren't waking up there as we had planned to. We packed our tent away in Needles and did some washing, fresh clothes, always a bonus. Then we set off for Needles town centre to get petrol and breakfast. We were having jack in the box for the first time, they do a big breakfast for 3 dollars, so we gave that a go. It was really nice, bacon, egg, pancakes and hash brown. Couldn't complain. After that, we drove back to the Mojave Desert and when we arrived it was 30 odd degrees again. But nevertheless, we wanted to hike and so we did. We went on the peg trail, but we didn't realise it was called that at the time. We walked around one of the huge cliffs in the photos, and followed a trail round to the back of the rocks and to a gap in them. We saw a lot of sand and a few birds but not much else, the child in me came out when I climbed a few rocks and took some photos. But before we knew it we were walking into a large crevice between the rocks and we assumed we had to turn back. But we pressed on as the trail signs told us to, and we soon found out why it was called the peg trail, the trail soon went upwards, and there were literally pegs in the rocks to go upwards. Metal pegs. But anyway I was thrilled at the prospect and marie got stuck right in as well. So we made it up the rocks and out the other side, even if sweating a little. Turns out we had made it back to the car park we started at. After that, we set off towards Barstow, and we would be staying at a KOA near the ghost town of Calico, which was our destination tomorrow. Most of our journey was through desert and so there wasn't much to see. Radio connection was awful so we were listening to the Jesus network or Bible FM, whatever it was called. That was interesting. We passed the Bagdad Cafe on the way, and that was one of the only significant stops on this stretch. We went through a few towns that looked near on deserted, but aside that, not too much of note. Once we got to the KOA we had a nice bit of time to set the tent up and chill out, I got to read my book and marie was cleaning some of the car out. We got a Jack in the Box for dinner and even had a blizzard for dessert. America will make us fat, I'm determined. But no seriously, I am craving vegetables daily. Anyway, we then settled down for bed and there was a fire not far away, a few fire engines attended and the smell of smoke wafted over the fields to us, so we stood by the bush and watched for a bit before going to bed.
