Today we set off for Yosemite National Park, which was 3 hours drive away. This was one of our big national park destinations and we were looking forward to it. We set off first thing and got going, we would be heading to mariposa, which is one of the towns at the bottom of the hill basically. You climb from there into the valley and Yosemite is around 40 miles from any of the lower towns. Anyway, we had been driving for around an hour and a half before we stopped for Oreos and petrol. Which happened to be a little way off the beaten track as fuel was expensive everywhere here. We filled up and drove on, the drive was winding roads through the hills and over a lake, very scenic. We also found a radio station worth listening to, which made the journey all the more bearable. But we got to Mariposa and then started the climb, you basically drive alongside the stream all the way up to the valley, it's a great drive. The cliff runs right alongside the road near enough the whole way there. We got to the top and paid to get in, and you drive under a massive rock just to reach the village at the top. We found out once we there that all the campsites were booked, so sleeping looked like it wasn't on the agenda tonight. Anyway, we queued for an hour to get to the main village, driving round Yosemite is awful. We parked outside the shop and figured out what the area was about for tomorrow. Then we decided we would drive back down and see if there was anywhere to stay, it was a Saturday night and we weren't hopeful. We tried rest stops and hotels and the only hotel that had rooms were $180 for one night, so we passed, the KOA was full. That meant we headed down to Mariposa, and got Burger King for dinner, they got our order done late, so they gave us an extra 10 nuggets, but 30 nuggets seemed a little too many. So we didn't eat them all. It was now only around 10, meaning we had another 6/7 hours before we could drive back to Yosemite to try and get a campground for the Sunday night. So we pulled up in the rest stop and tried to rest, there was one other set of people doing the same, but we took shifts at sleeping. We managed to get about 3 hours sleep each. Tomorrow we would just have to be tired.
