We set off at 0630 in bright sunshine and no wind, motoring dwon the Sound of Kerrera and through the Great Race, safely past the notorious Corryvreckan, accompanied by dolphins some of the way. 40 NM later we wove our way through the tricky marked entrance to West Loch Tarbert, where we had planned to anchor for the night. However, after hearing the forecast and some VHF chat from other sailors for the next day, we decided to continue down the Sound of Islay to Port Ellen. We managed a few hours good sailing at 6k on a broad reach until we reached the Ardmore Islands, south of Islay, and motor-sailed the rest of the way to Port Ellen, completing a 74NM passage for the day. We 'blagged' our way onto a nice pontoon berth, much to the chagrin of later arriving sailors, who had to sit out at anchor in an uncomfortably exposed bay!
